Reading & Writing Tips and Strategies

-Read with your child EVERY night and ask literal (who, what, where, when, why) questions as you read

-Ask your child to make predictions while they read or you read to them.  You can also encourage them to make predictions while watching a show or movie

-Encourage your child to use descriptive words while they are telling you about their day or telling you a story.  Verbally using descriptive words will transfer into their writing.

-Encourage your child to challenge themselves and time their reading.  You can graph the number of words they read in one minute and watch the improvement right before your eyes!

-Check out the students page for more ideas!

Technology in Our Classroom

A variety of technology tools, software and devices are used on a daily basis in my classroom.  Examples of some of the technology used are listed below.  I have included several links so feel free to explore!  Please contact me with any questions.

** Promethean Board with ActiveInspire for interactive activities and lessons.

**Jing for taking computer screen snapshots and making how-to videos.

**WordQ for assisting students who have difficulty with writing.  This is a word prediction software.

**Audacity for recording students while reading to practice fluency, phrasing and expression.

**Kurzweil for assisting students with reading difficulties to access grade level texts.  This is a text screen reader.

**Flip video cameras to help students demonstrate their learning and for video modeling purposes for social and behavior skills training.

**Document camera and projector to model lessons and skills for students and to provide a "think aloud" model.

**Desktop computers and laptop cart to allow students to type written responses or research given websites on the internet.

Math Tips and Strategies

-Suggested minutes per week and month students should practice their math facts by grade level:

  • 2nd grade: 15 minutes per week, 60 minutes per month
  • 3rd grade: 20 minutes per week, 80 minutes per month
  • 4th grade: 25 minutes per week, 100 minutes per month
  • 5th grade: 30 minutes per week, 120 minutes per month

- Try to incorporate math into real world activities such as grocery shopping, cooking and baking, sporting statistics, rearranging furniture, planning a budget/banking and much, much more!

-Encourage your child to find patterns in their environment
